Removal

  1. Remove the front driveshaft.
    Refer to: Front Driveshaft (205-01 Driveshaft, Removal and Installation).
  1. Remove and discard the front axle drive pinion stem nut.
  1. Using a general equipment, remove and discard the front drive pinion seal dust cover.
    Use the General Equipment: Flat Headed Screw Driver
  1. Using a general equipment, remove and discard the front drive pinion seal.
    Use the General Equipment: Flat Headed Screw Driver

Installation

  1. NOTE: Make sure that the component is clean, free of foreign material and lubricant.

    Clean and inspect the front drive pinion oil seal matting surface.
  1. Lubricate the new drive pinion seal lip with grease.
    Material: Motorcraft® High Temperature 4x4 Front Axle and Wheel Bearing Grease / XG-11 (WSS-M1C267-A1)
  1. NOTE: Installation of the halfshaft oil seal without the correct tools can result in early seal failure.

    NOTE: Do not disassemble the new oil seal.

    Install the new drive pinion seal onto a suitable special tool.
    Use Special Service Tool: 205-1065  Installer, Pinion Seal. , 205-199 (T83T-3132-A1)  Installer, Spindle/Axle Shaft.
  1. NOTICE: Strike only the handle. Directly striking the installer tool will damage the seal.

    Using the special tools, install the new drive pinion seal.
    Use Special Service Tool: 205-1065  Installer, Pinion Seal. , 205-199 (T83T-3132-A1)  Installer, Spindle/Axle Shaft.
  1. Install the new drive pinion seal dust cover.
  1. NOTE: This step require the aid of another technician.

    Install the new front axle drive pinion stem nut.
    Torque: 266 lb.ft (360 Nm)
  1. Install the front driveshaft.
    Refer to: Front Driveshaft (205-01 Driveshaft, Removal and Installation).

    WARNING: Position the seatbelt height adjuster so that the seatbelt rests across the middle of your shoulder. Failure to adjust the seatbelt correctly could reduce its effectiveness and increase the risk of injury in a crash.

    Adjust the height of the shoulder belt so the belt rests across the middle of your shoulder. Slide the adjuster up to raise the belt. Press the button and slide it down to lower the belt.
