Lincoln Aviator: Front Seats / Removal and Installation - Front Seat Backrest

Removal

  WARNING: The following procedure describes critical repair steps required for correct seat component installation. Follow all notes and steps carefully. Do not place any objects between the seat components and the body of the vehicle, nor any objects within a joint internal to the seat structure. Failure to follow step instructions may result in incorrect operation of the seat components and increases the risk of serious personal injury.

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

NOTE: Driver seat with power head restraint shown, other seats similar.

  1. Remove the front seat.
    Refer to: Front Seat (501-10A Front Seats, Removal and Installation).
  1. Remove the side shield screws.

  1. Remove the LH side shield.
    1. Lift up and out, separating the side shield from the recliner bracket.
    1. Slide the side shield forward and separate the side shield from the seat.

  1. Remove the RH side shield.
    1. Lift up and out, separating the side shield from the recliner bracket.
    1. Slide the side shield forward and separate the side shield from the seat.
  1. Remove the front seat backrest panel.
    Refer to: Front Seat Backrest Panel (501-10A Front Seats, Removal and Installation).
  1. NOTE: After disconnecting the hose and lock assembly, verify the black O-ring and white spacer remains with each hose.

    NOTE: When connecting the hose and lock assemblies, an audible click must be heard for correct installation.

    If equipped with multi-contour seats.
    Detach the front seat cushion adjuster hose assembly.
    1. Release the locking tab and disconnect the front seat cushion adjuster hose assembly from the SCMG.
    1. Detach the retainers and position the front seat cushion adjuster hose assembly aside.
  1. NOTE: After disconnecting the hose and lock assemblies, verify the black O-ring and white spacer remains with each hose.

    NOTE: When connecting the hose and lock assemblies, an audible click must be heard for correct installation.

    If equipped with multi-contour seats.
    Detach the multi-contour seat cushion hose retainers, release the locking tab, disconnect the hose and lock assembly from the SCMG and route the hose assembly out from the backrest.
  1. Remove the screws and the LH inner shield.
  1. Remove the screws and the RH inner shield.
    1. Disconnect the side airbag electrical connector.
    1. Disconnect the front seat electrical connectors.
    1. Detach the front seat wiring harness retainers.
  1. On both sides.
    Remove the bolts and the front seat backrest.
    Torque: 35 lb.ft (47 Nm)
  1. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.

    Remove the side airbag.
    Refer to: Side Airbag (501-20B Supplemental Restraint System, Removal and Installation).
  1. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.

    Remove the front seat backrest cover.
    Refer to: Front Seat Backrest Cover - Vehicles Without: Multi-Contour Seats (501-10A Front Seats, Removal and Installation).
    Refer to: Front Seat Backrest Cover - Vehicles With: Multi-Contour Seats (501-10A Front Seats, Removal and Installation).
  1. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.

    Remove the front seat power lumbar assembly.
    Refer to: Front Seat Power Lumbar Assembly - Vehicles Without: Multi-Contour Seats (501-10A Front Seats, Removal and Installation).
    Refer to: Front Seat Power Lumbar Assembly - Vehicles With: Multi-Contour Seats (501-10A Front Seats, Removal and Installation).
  1. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.

    Remove the front head restraint guide sleeves.
    Refer to: Front Head Restraint Guide Sleeve (501-10A Front Seats, Removal and Installation).
    1. Feed the side airbag electrical connector through the front seat backrest frame.
    1. Detach the side airbag wiring harness retainer.
  1. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.

    Disconnect the front seat backrest electrical connectors and position aside.
  1. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.


    Remove the front seat backrest wiring harness.
    1. Detach the wiring harness retainer.
    1. Remove the screws.
    1. Remove the pin-type retainers.
  1. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.

    Remove the screws.
  1. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.


    Remove the front seat backrest module bolts.
    1. Remove the bolt.
      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)
    1. Remove the bolts.
      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)
  1. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.

    Remove the front seat backrest module.

Installation

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
